Introducing Penelope Culbertson, one of the artists working on the #InternationalMuralByMail here at the
Elisabeth Jones Art Center! Penelope teaches watercolors and calligraphy and has been working recently on a colorful collaboration with Six Eyes Collective in Pakistan! @mariumjk @safwansubzwari https://penelopeculbertson.fineartstudioonline.com/
Penelope Culbertson began her art studies at the Portland Art Museum as a child, in the art department at Cleveland High School, at Reed College with calligraphy master Lloyd Reynolds, at Willamette University in Salem, at the San Francisco Art Institute, and the Institute de Bellas Artes in San Miguel, Mexico. After moving to Hawaii, she studied with many well-known watercolorists including Zoltan Szabo, Hiroki Morinoue, Ken Hosmer and Gayle Anderson. She learned to paint, teach and operate art galleries. She was the co-founder of the Art Academy of Kona and the West Hawaii Arts Guild where she served on the Executive Board.
Since her return to Portland in 1994, Penelope has had seventeen solo exhibits of her watercolors. She showed year round at the Hawthorne Arts Gallery and annually at the Buckman Art Show where she was the founding chairman of the Children's Art Sale. She taught children's art classes at the Buckman Arts Magnet Elementary and for the Portland Parks Dept in their after-school program. In 1999 she helped produce a book of children's watercolors about the Portland Water System. She was co-founder of The Hawthorne Arts Guild and showed in all their monthly group shows.
Penelope teaches weekly classes in calligraphy and watercolors for the disabled. She experiments in watercolors, oil pastels, collage, tapestry weaving and calligraphy. She is a member of the Portland Society of Calligraphy. She has two watercolors and the beach mural currently in limited edition prints. She is now painting on large panels.
Currently she is showing at Fairweather's Gallery in Seaside, Oregon and Arabella Gallery in Windsor, VT.
Check out progress on the second part of our #InternationalMuralByMail exchange with @hello_anna_maria, our Polish collaborator in Spain! We have a train carriage full of insect-people, it's raining donuts outside, and as a bonus, we get some mouth-watering Spanish recipes... @essiesomma
Introducing @anyamirk, an artist working on the #InternationalMuralbyMail here at the Elisabeth Jones Art Center! Anya paints plants, people and landscapes in dreamy, deep watercolors, and has been working recently on our exchange with Arif Bahaduri.
Growing up in Soviet-era Ukraine, Anya Mironets Keyes long dreamed of becoming a painter. After moving to the US and a decade dispensing pills in the pharmacy, she’s finally gotten to her dream job, sharing a studio with women artists in NE Portland and spending her days happily painting.
"When I paint I intentionally leave the marks of the process in my artwork, incorporating paint runs and exposed underpaintings into the final product. By leaving space for undetailed segments, my hope is to give viewers space to fill in the gaps with their own mental image and imagination."
@joannekollman and @anyamirk at work on our collaboration for the #InternationalMuralByMail with Afghan artist @arifbahaduri !
